Boiler Installation Costs - How much does a new boiler cost?

The cost of a new boiler installation is often one of the very first considerations for anyone in the market for a new boiler and gas-safe installation, so how much should you expect to pay?

Let’s face it - boiler installations are never as cheap as we want them to be.

But for a modern, efficient green boiler that performs the important role of keeping your home supplied with hot water and heating for over a decade, it’s worth the investment. Ask any of your children who are forced to go without hot water.

Boiler installation costs can vary significantly, which is dependent on numerous factors, these can be summarised as follows:

  • The type of boiler you have installed e.g. regular, combi or system

  • The model you choose e.g. mid-range vs. premium

  • If you want to move your boiler to a different location

  • If you want to convert from one boiler type to another

  • Any extras you purchase e.g. smart thermostats, filters etc

For illustration, a straightforward combi swap (installing a new combi boiler in place of your current one) is going to be less expensive than converting from a different type of boiler to another e.g. from a combi to a system boiler.

...Why does it cost more?

They are typically more complex installations, requiring more time, more labour and more materials.

The boiler model you choose also impacts price, for example, we offer maximum value brands like Alpha boilers, as well as premium, award-winning boilers, such as Worcester Bosch and Viessmann.

However, bear in mind that according to the Which? annual boiler survey, the least reliable brand is more than three times as likely to break down, compared to the best. If you think shopping for a boiler once is annoying, wait until you need to again.

The great news is that you can pay for our boilers in multiple ways including cash and finance via a pay monthly boiler scheme

Boiler Installation - Factors to consider

Since your boiler is not an inexpensive item, it’s essential to consider some important factors, before making a decision, these include the following:

Note: you don’t have to worry about being a boiler expert, we designed our boiler quote tool to help you choose the best boiler for your home in under 60 seconds.

What size boiler do you need? (kW output)

The size of a boiler usually refers to the boiler’s power output and not its physical dimensions.

A boiler's power is measured in kilowatts (kW), so in simple terms, the higher the kW, the greater the capacity of the boiler to meet your properties' hot water and heating demands.

To give a clearer example: if you’re a (for copyright purposes unnamed) wizard boy, you’d need a larger size boiler to heat up a castle housing a magic school than a small studio under your uncle’s staircase. Hypothetically.

The majority of boiler manufacturers offer their boilers in a variety of different sizes.

Your boiler installer can help you work out what size boiler you need, or you can use our quick, free calculator here

For example, if you live in a small flat, then a small combi boiler is likely going to be recommended.

However, if your property is a large four-bedroom property with multiple radiators and bathrooms, you are likely going to be recommended a large boiler to meet your hot water and heating demands comments professional house buyer Paul Gibbens.

Do you want to move your boiler?

It’s not uncommon for people to want to have their new boiler installed in a different location than their old one.

However, it’s important to note that this will incur extra costs and so it typically makes financial sense to keep your boiler in the same location.

...why does it cost more?

Moving a boiler means that the pipework also has to be moved, this often means re-routing it through your home, as well as the installation of a new flue.

All of this not only takes more time but requires more labour and materials. The shorter your installer is on-site, the less money (and coffee) he costs.

Boiler Installation time

It’s also crucial to be aware of how long the boiler installation may take, as some installations are inherently more complicated and so require more time to complete.

For instance, a regular combi swap i.e. replacing your old combi boiler with a new combi boiler exactly where it was takes around a day on average.

However, if you are having your boiler converted to a different type e.g. a combi to a system, it usually takes around 2 days to complete.

Boiler manufacturers to choose from

Perhaps one of the most important considerations is the boiler brand you choose since not all boilers are made equally much like farm animals.

The good news is that Heatable offers a range of boiler types from reputable, award-winning brands, so you can be confident knowing your boiler fitting will not be carried out by Gas Safe engineers but will be a boiler manufactured by a trusted name in the industry.

The boilers we fit include the following brands:

Worcester Bosch boiler installation

Worcester Bosch remains one of the UK’s most popular boiler brands and for good reason, not only do they hold a royal warrant but they have been awarded a Which? Best Buy Award for 10 consecutive years. That’s the same time span as their guarantee. Coincidence? Probably, yes.

Why else do we recommend and install Worcester Bosch boilers?

  • Which? Best Buy Award for 10 years running

  • 10-year guarantee (when purchased via Heatable)

  • Availability of parts is second to none

  • Excellent customer reviews and aftercare

  • High-efficiency A-rated combi boilers

Viessmann boiler installation

Viessmann is another award-winning boiler manufacturer that benefits from German engineering and is renowned for its simple, crisp designs and technical brilliance, much like a German-engineered can opener, for example.

Viessmann boilers are technically brilliant, for example, they use a stainless steel heat exchanger instead of the typical aluminium variety found in most other rival brands.

Stainless steel is more durable, better able to deal with sludge and withstand years of corrosion, two major culprits of boiler faults and failures.

Check out our Viessmann reviews here:

Alpha boiler installation

Alpha Innovations is a relatively new boiler brand in the UK market, but one that is growing in popularity due to its highly competitive pricing and high-quality build. In those ways, it’s the opposite of that other ‘Alpha’: the typical Alfa Romeo.

They are an ideal option for those on a budget looking for a reliable and affordable heating solution with a generous warranty (10 years exclusive to Heatable).
